Protein Preparation for Assay

  • If you need to do further preparation to you protein mixture before assaying do it to you entire sample
  • TCA or acetone precipitation is an option for removing contaminants
One final thing to consider is that if significant amounts of contaminants are present in your protein mixture that require subsequent removal for protein assay, you should consider removing all of these from you entire mixture.  This is because any further preparations (i.e. desalting) will lead to small but significant losses of protein.  Some researchers use a TCA or acetone precipitation prior to assay.  This has the advantage that almost all salts and contaminant are removed.  These methods are outlined in supplementary procedures.
